Some of the Nazca lines are kilometres long. They were formed by removing the dark volcanic rock fragments from the surface of the desert leaving the light sandy surface visible. Each figure is made up of one continuous line. They can only be seen clearly from the air and so there is some mystery as to how or indeed why they were first made. The flight over them is challenging as the small plane tips from one wing edge to the other to allow a view out of the side windows - not recommended for poor flyers. Some of the photos are not as clear as they might be, because there is a very narrow time slot when the shadows fall in the correct place to show the figures clearly and give good contrast. Some of our photographs are at present not identified. Once we have unpacked the Nazca book we will hopefully be able to clarify the identity of these figurers.
